Study results show that treatment with Seretide/Advair (salmeterol/fluticasone propionate ) slows the progression of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) by lowering a patient’s rate of lung function decline compared with those receiving placebo.

AstraZeneca have submitted a supplementary NDA for Symbicort (budesonide/formoterol fumarate dihydrate) for the treatment of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Symbicort is already approved for the long-term maintenance treatment of asthma.

The FDA has approved Advair Diskus 250/50 (fluticasone propionate 250 mcg and salmeterol 50 mcg inhalation powder) for the reduction of exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is the first drug to be approved by the FDA to reduce COPD exacerbations.
